“Management is doing things right… Leadership is doing the right thing.”
Peter Drucker – Author

What is leadership?

What do we mean by Leadership?
When we think of good leadership, what do we see and feel?

The following quotes on leadership show the variety of opinions that exist on what leadership is and what it looks like:

“A leader is a dealer in hope” – Napolean Bonaparte
“Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower” – Steve Jobs
“Leadership is practiced not so much in words, but in attitudes and actions” – Harold S. Green
“A good leader takes a little more than his share of the blame and a little less than his share of the credit” – Arnold H. Glasow

In this audio clip, you’ll hear from Penny Briscoe OBE. Penny was Chef de Mission for Paralympics GB at the Sochi Winter Games and the Rio Summer Games and will be again for the rearranged Tokyo Games in 2021. Penny discusses what good leadership looks like and feels like and how as leader for the huge squad of athltetes and support staff at each games she sought to embed leadership at every level.

Think back to a time when you have experienced good leadership – what were the behaviours and characteristics you saw? How did it make you feel?

“I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep, but I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion”
Alexander the Great
