Authenticity – values, behaviours & expressions
Value driven leadership
Leadership values are important because they help you determine how you want to achieve your goals and what type of leader you want to be. … Leadership values also help you grow and develop both personally and professionally. Having a strong set of core values as a leader helps build respect and trust among your team. Values-driven leadership occurs when leaders are driven by values that shape their mindset and inform their decisions and actions.
What are your values?
Values – guide decisions – drive behaviour – influence perception & reaction
If you are unsure of your personal values or would like to explore them in more detail, work through the following exercises:
Thinking back through your life to date, who were your role models? What were the behaviours that made them a role model for you?
What would you like your role models to say about you? Or the people most important to you? What words would they use to describe you? How would you like to be remembered?
Using those reflections as a guide, think of 8-10 values words (adjectives) that encompass how you would like to be described.
Of those 8-10 words, if you could only choose 3 or 4 which are the ones that really matter?
Exercise 5: (Possibly the most important)
Turn your adjectives into verbs – what are the behaviours that associate with your values? What will people, see and hear from you? How will you make them feel?
These values and behaviours form the core of how you build your leadership philosophy or style.
